I come from a family who have never let the fashion trend of their time pass them by, as family photographs testify.
My mother was an immaculate 50’s babe in the Elizabeth Taylor mode. My uncle, a teddy boy looking not unlike Elvis, who pioneered the wearing of flip flops for men on his return from national service in Hong Kong. My auntie, a Mod who got married in fantastic trouser suit complete with pumps and the sharpest bob ever. My older sisters were 70’s disco babe and New Romantic respectively. Friday nights involved a constant stream of youth fashions paraded through our house. When you are exposed to boys ready to go clubbing in sparkly tights, pumps and make up you never quite get over it.
Hence I have always believed clothes should be fascinating and exciting or classy and stylish but never boring. Dressing should be many things, a style adventure, fun and frivolous, not too stuffy and done with enthusiasm. Drip-dry mass produced anything is not for the likes of us.

My family also provides a nice mix of ready-made experts helping me age and categorise pieces.
At Mavro Vintage we care that the item you choose should be perfect for your needs. Please excuse the little eccentricity of switches between metric and imperial measurements as I have tried to find the best way to communicate an item's size.
Mavro Vintage will have constantly changing stock but being newly opened there are still many exciting items to add. More beautiful bags including very fine skin examples, jewellery from a wide range of decades and interesting things to slip into the Boudoir and Vintage Vanity section.
Enjoy your time browsing the site and call back often. Please take the opportunity to add me to your favourites.
Thank you
Adele

Sizing |

We have come to learn that vintage sizing is a mysterious world indeed. Items were often tailor made for individuals, and to have that size sewn into your garment would have been unnecessary and vulgar. Most items come from an age before cheap mass production and its obvious need to standardise sizing. Since standard sizing came about body shapes and images have changed, hence a 70’s piece marked size 10 could be markedly smaller than a current size 10.
Baring this in mind we will do all we can to help and advise you on the size and fit of each piece. We consider factors such as construction, wearing style and the give of the cloth. Relevant measurements will be given within each description.
Measurements have been taken with the garment lying flat as follows:
CHEST under arm to under arm
SLEEVE sleeve shoulder to end of sleeve
BACK shoulder seam to shoulder seam at widest point
WAIST seam to seam
HIPS seam to seam
INSIDE LEG inside leg
SKIRT LENGTH waist to hem
DRESS LENGTH neck to hem at back
SHIRT LENGTH neck to hem at back.
….and for the piece you cannot live without
Please also consider professional alteration. Vintage garments are items of quality fabrics and construction. They were often made with future alterations in mind (generous seams and hems etc). They come from an age different to our throwaway society and were made to last even if you changed shape.
Professional tailors and small businesses that offer an alteration service have been my constant allies in wearing vintage. In my experience they have been helpful, knowledgeable and offer a wonderful service. They can be found in the Yellow Pages. |
